Hello, and welcome! My name is TR, and I am the founder and lead consultant with Good Neighbour Consulting. I worked in a variety of emergency management and public safety positions in municipal government for over two decades, and although I loved my work I felt restricted by the politics and boundaries of government roles. Ever since I began graduate school and learned about social vulnerability theory I had a desire to work directly with communities at the grass-roots level. As a vulnerable person myself - I am a queer, neurodivergent woman, and was low-income for many years in my past - I know how it feels to not fit a mold or not be able to access the same resources and supports as others, or to be discriminated against or turned away. It is not a good feeling.
Something as simple as the ability to stockpile extra food supplies, having a secure home to shelter in place or a vehicle to evacuate, acquiring extra medication, or having ID to access emergency services is not available to all persons. Usually, emergency management plans are written for abled people with means - money, vehicles, and support systems - and do not include vulnerable populations within those plans. It is impossible to shelter in place if you do not have a secure home, to evacuate if you do not drive, to get to help if you are differently abled, to take care of yourself if you do not have emergency supplies of food and medication, to understand what to do if you do not speak the language, and to access emergency resources if you do not have current local ID (among many other things). This is where Good Neighbour Consulting comes in. Our mandate is to help lessen the gap between the vulnerable and the privileged, and advocate for those who are often left out of emergency management spaces.
I am extremely passionate about this work. As a true emergency management nerd, I am always up-to-date on what's going on and what the current hazards and risks are. As an extremely empathetic human, I am always considering those who may be impacted by or left behind during a disaster event. My passion lies at the intersection of these two things.
I look forward to working with you.
